Investing in Our Planet on Earth Day
BY ASHNEEL CHAND — On April 22, OUTRIGGER Fiji Beach Resort (FOR) celebrated Earth Day. The theme for this year was “Invest in our Planet” and considering the theme, the team decided to focus on the reef ecosystem, as it is an integral part of the resort’s identity and our motivation toward our OZONE initiative. The activity for the event was in collaboration with Dive Away Fiji. FOR’s very own onsite PADI diver, Alfie, assisted the team on the day.
Activities included coral planting, fish-house sinking with guests given an opportunity to make donations to our OutriggerCARES fund for future environmental and community projects in the year. Donations were purely voluntary.
Apart from the planting of corals and sinking fish houses, the team also carried out cleaning around the resort nursery site and looked for Crown of Thorns Starfish (COTS) to remove. At the end of the day with the help of guests and hosts, the team planted 15 coral cones, sunk 3 fish houses, removed 2 COTS and cleaned around our nursery sites.
