February Host of the Month — Rodel Villamar

Markus Krebs, Rodel Villamar and Chef Dean Kamiya | ORF Team support for Rodel
Rodel has been a dedicated food and beverage host for a little over a year-and-a-half. Through his desire to cook for customers and his willingness, he works at many different stations and outlets. He serves as one of our main Kani Ka Pilla back-of-the-house hosts as well as for our banquet events.
Rodel works hard for Outrigger day in and day out. He attendance is outstanding and he is often willing to fill in extra shifts when necessary. His knowledge and leadership on the hot line make him an excellent candidate for Host of the Month.
Though Rodel works as a back-of-the-house team member, he understands making our guests happy is our common goal. He strives to cook great food daily. Rodel will also make sure the many special requests we receive, along with dietary accommodations, are met to ensure a memorable guest experience. Rodel also excels at the many special events and stations we have.
From his work ethic to his attitude, Rodel is an outstanding team member and a great co-worker to our other front- and back-of-the-house hosts.
– Nominated by Dean Kamiya, Executive Chef

Aloha, Eugene!
BY VICTORIA TAPICERIA — Please join us in wishing Eugene Chu a happy retirement! Eugene started his Outrigger journey 39 years ago on October 19, 1983, and is the longest standing host in his department since the Outrigger Waikiki opened in 1967. As he likes to state, he is one of the “originals!”
Our OWK leaders and the maintenance team were honored to join him on his last day of work to celebrate his years of service. When asked what his plans are after retirement, he replied “taking care of his family.” Warmest wishes and mahalo, Eugene, for your dedication.

Top: Cherwin Meheula-Solomon | Steve Miller, Cherwin Meheula-Solomon and Luana Maitland | Bottom: Nominees Reiko Caires, Jin Min Gan, Eric Acio, Cherwin Mehula-Solomon, Ricky Kuga and Wayne Talaro
Since returning from furlough, Cherwin immediately started sharing his overflowing knowledge of the Hawaiian culture with our guests and hosts. It comes from the heart and is evident from the many guest comments we receive. Cherwin willingly helps when asked to conduct a special class or to make time to reschedule a lesson that a guest missed. He always volunteers to assist with Outrigger events or community outreach programs beyond his work schedule.
In my 10-year review with Cherwin, I asked him what are some of his highlights or accomplishments he would like to share and his answer was that he was blessed to be given the opportunity to learn about the hospitality industry, the importance of Outrigger’s Values of caring for our guests, host and place and what The Outrigger Way truly means and how easy it is for him to apply this in his Cultural Experience Program. Being humble and patient are his best qualities; keiki and kupuna enjoy learning from him.
In October 2022, Cherwin celebrated working 10 years with Outrigger, his birthday and Host of the Month. He is looking forward to many more wonderful experiences and opportunities with the Outrigger ‘ohana.
Guest Comments:
- Cherwin was so accommodating and highly motivated to ensure a great experience.
- Cherwin was amazing and made the trip that much better. We were there with a 4- and 10-year-old and he made clever memories for them.
- Cherwin was a most excellent activity leader. He provided interesting cultural information that enhanced all activities.
- Cherwin was charming and fun and remembered me afterwards as our paths crossed.
– Nominated by Luana Maitland, Director of Cultural Experience
