Another Successful Battle of the Paddle

By Nancy Daniels

The Rainbow Sandals Gerry Lopez Battle of the Paddle, presented by Quiksilver Waterman Collection, was held last weekend for the second year, and by all accounts, it was another rousing success. Outrigger was proud to be a sponsor of this exciting weekend event that saw over 600 stand-up paddlers (SUP) from around the world — both young and old, elite-class and novice — descend on Waikīkī for two days of fast-paced paddling. Thousands of spectators lined Waikīkī Beach to cheer on the athletes.

Paddlers from around the world compete in the Battle of the Paddle

Australian Travis Grant turned the tables on good friend and long-time paddling partner Danny Ching (USA) to win the Elite race on Saturday, but Danny turned the tides on Travis and other competitors by coming in first the following day in the 9-mile Hawaii Kai to Duke Kahanamoku Beach downwind race in a stand-up paddle record time of one hour, 20 minutes, and 27 seconds.

Outrigger Reef on the Beach and Waikiki Beach Walk® were proud sponsors of this event with many competitors and spectators staying at the Outrigger Reef, Outrigger Luana Waikiki, and OHANA Waikiki Malia hotels. Also, the Battle of the Paddle’s press day was held at the Outrigger Reef, where media had the opportunity to meet and interview organizers and competitors in advance of the busy weekend.
